The Fire Onion Cup is back. This time, the Celestyniaki will be playing for the animal shelter

Recently, initiatives that go beyond mere competition have been appearing more and more frequently on the underground scene. Tournaments organised by the community not only give lesser-known teams the chance to showcase themselves to a wider audience, but can also provide tangible support. The Fire Onion Cup is returning with just such a project. After three standard editions, the organisers have decided to adopt a charity format this time round.

On 16 May, a one-day online tournament will take place, with the aim of supporting the Celestyniaki shelter for homeless animals in Celestynów. The organisers have announced eight teams, thrilling matches and further announcements relating to the event. Although there’s still some time to go before the start, the initial details already suggest they’re putting together a truly interesting initiative.

The Fire Onion Cup returns as a charity event

The Fire Onion Cup has already made its mark on the Counter-Strike underground scene by organising several previous editions of the tournament. This time, however, the organisers have decided to go a step further and use their event for a worthy cause. The latest instalment of the “Fire Onion Cup” will take place as a charity tournament, with the initiative aimed at supporting the aforementioned shelter for homeless animals in Celestynów.

The entire competition will be played over the course of a single day, with teams facing off against each other online. Eight teams will be in action, and all signs suggest that the organisers will opt for a simple and dynamic single-elimination format. Matches will be played in a BO1 format, meaning that virtually every match could produce a surprise or a sensational result. It is also possible that, in addition to the final, there will be a third-place play-off.

Although the full schedule has not yet been revealed, the first matches are expected to begin in the evening – probably around 7.00 pm or 8.00 pm. Everything also suggests that the event will be streamed on the organisers’ Twitch channel, allowing the community to actively participate in the whole initiative.

However, the most important aspect remains the very purpose of the event. At a time when most smaller tournaments focus solely on competition and building a following, the Fire Onion Cup has decided to use its profile to support an animal shelter and draw attention to helping homeless animals. It is initiatives like this that show that even grassroots esports can achieve something truly worthwhile.

First teams already revealed

The organisers have already revealed half of the line-up set to take part in the tournament. Among the first teams invited are NPK Esport, Team Fairus, ZeroPomysłu and VoFoxen Esport. Interestingly, as many as three of these teams are well known to our community, as they are part of the partner programme.

VoFoxen Esport is likely to attract the most attention from fans. The team has been appearing more and more frequently in various competitions in recent weeks. They also recently managed to reach the final of the LAN tournament at the UEK Juwenalia, where they finished in second place. The team is clearly establishing its position on the scene and, for many, may well be one of the favourites for the entire event.

The situation at NPK Esport is currently a little more uncertain. The team has recently undergone several line-up changes and is still awaiting its official debut with the new line-up. However, all the signs suggest that the Fire Onion Cup could be one of the first opportunities to see the team in action ahead of their next major competitions, including the upcoming LuckyXII. Team Fairus, meanwhile, remains a team that operates rather quietly. Nevertheless, they regularly feature in smaller tournaments and remain active on the scene. Events such as the Fire Onion Cup provide them with a good opportunity to remind a wider audience of their presence.

We currently know the least about ZeroPomysłu, which operates outside the partner ecosystem. This does not, however, change the fact that it is precisely such teams that can often spring the biggest surprises in BO1 tournaments, where there is virtually no margin for error. Four teams are still needed to complete the line-up, so the organisers should be revealing further details in the coming days. Judging by the initial announcements, however, we can expect a really solid mix of well-known names and ambitious underground line-ups.

The community plays for a good cause

Although the Fire Onion Cup has built its brand around the underground CS scene from the outset, the latest edition shows that such initiatives can mean much more than just another set of matches and tables. The charity tournament for the Celestyniaki shelter is, above all, an example of how even a smaller community can combine esports competition with real-world support.

Further announcements regarding participants and event details are still to come. However, this does not change the fact that it is already clear that 16 May is shaping up to be a very interesting evening. So all that remains is to wait for the full list of teams and see how the Fire Onion Cup reveals the next details about the tournament.
