“The Polish esports scene is in a very poor state” – an interview with the CEO of VoFoxen Esport

We’ve interviewed a great many people over the years. Most often, of course, these are players from our partner teams or coaches. Today, however, we’d like to introduce you to someone who works a bit behind the scenes at VoFoxen. It is, of course, the CEO of the entire project, Dawid “CieŚla” Horzępa. Earlier in his career, he played for the Foxes, but now he’s thriving in his role as owner. Read on to find out more about him and the organisation!

[R] Hi Dawid. To start with, please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi. Thank you very much for the invitation and for your time.
Dawid “Cie$la” Horzępa – CEO of VoFoxen Esport, 30 years old, happily married, and I work as a Manager at an international corporation. It’s a great pleasure to welcome all our readers.

[R] Can you tell us about the origins of your organisation? Where did the idea for the name and logo come from?

The story behind the organisation’s creation and the name is very simple – you could say that a single seed has grown into a bountiful harvest, but we’ll come back to that later in the interview. As for the logo – if anyone has been following us for a while, they’ve probably noticed that we spent quite a long time searching for our visual identity, but the final version prepared by our team (our graphic designer in particular deserves a round of applause) really caught my eye and won my heart, so I want to build our brand around it.

[R] In the gaming scene, most owners of organisations, teams and projects have a background as players of games like Counter-Strike or League of Legends – do you have one too?

It was exactly the same for me, and this is where we’ll tie in the story of our organisation’s origins and name.
As an inexperienced player, I began my adventure with VoFoxen by playing in the squad for a while, but my 10 years’ experience in people management (though I probably wasn’t much of a marksman) led me to set up the academy – VoFoxen Blue.
After a few months, together with M1K1 (one of the players from that academy, who is now vCEO), we saw that the main squad was falling apart, the organisation had no management / decision-making / major ambitions, so I decided to buy the copyright to the name VoFoxen and rebuild it from scratch.
To this day, I try to play regularly (whenever time allows); I’m also a huge fan of FaZe, and I’ve been to EVERY IEM that’s taken place in Katowice (even the one during the pandemic – I went to Spodek and snapped a photo :D).

[R] Why did you decide to set up an esports team? For your own satisfaction, or perhaps for bigger goals?

In my opinion, the Polish esports scene is in a very poor state (we’re not just talking about the top teams and players here, but also the underground scene) – Players have too big an ego; they can’t be bothered to invest time in developing not only their skills but also the organisation, because they want to play on the big stages straight away, lift trophies and get contracts from esports giants.

From the very start of our project, I’ve said it CLEARLY AND LOUDLY to everyone who’s joined – trust us, give it time and get involved, and you won’t regret it – I think everyone who works with us can confirm that we’re moving forward in small steps, and even when we need to take a few steps back (a loss, low morale or something similar), we do it all together and everyone pulls each other forward.

Walt Disney once said, “If you can DREAM it, you can do it.”
My main goal has been, is, and will always be long-term action: to show that Polish CS can be saved, and in a few years’ time to watch our lads, together with the whole crew, battling it out in the IEM qualifiers (whether it’s in Kraków, whether it returns to Katowice, or whether it moves to Ciechocinek – WE’LL BE THERE).

[R] What are your goals for this year, as VoFoxen Esport?

2025 is a real rocket ship for our organisation; we’re just finishing our eighth month, and we’ve already achieved so much of what we set out to do in January.
We’re very open about our intentions, but most of them just fall into place – if not from us as the management, then from the players or our friends who support us so much.

[R] As the project owner, do you impose goals on your divisions, or is that the captain’s/coach’s job?

I’ve never made a secret of the fact that our organisation is still a non-profit. As CEO, I use my knowledge and experience in management, but to our squad I’m ‘GRANDAD’ – I offer support, help, a point of view – they shouldn’t feel any pressure from me, because this is OUR organisation and we all work together.

[R] Some project owners eventually become coaches for their teams; do you have similar plans? Do you think you lack the aptitude for it?

I never say never, but in my current life situation, I’ll leave that to professionals like Zeus. Maybe when Grandad does retire, he’ll be able to develop his coaching skills? Time will tell!
