A tough first half of the ESEA Main season for the Hussars – what went wrong?

- -

We’re already halfway through the 53rd ESEA season, and we’re finally taking a look at the Main division, where the Hussars are battling it out for points. Unfortunately, we don’t have good news; their current record of 1–7 speaks for itself. The start of the season has proved particularly painful for them, and their prospects for the play-offs are now more of a pipe dream than a realistic goal. Will the team manage to rally and fight back, or will they write this season off as a lost cause?

A run of defeats and shattered dreams – who has stopped the Hussars?

  • DESINGNADTED 13:10 Hussars, Anubis

This match could have been a turning point. From the outset, the Hussars dictated the pace of the game, effectively reading their opponents’ rotations and winning round after round on the attack. The players played boldly, showing no fear in entering bombsites and making the most of the space on the map. At half-time, they led 5–7, which, on Anubis – a map known for being difficult to control – provided a solid foundation for victory.

Unfortunately, after the side switch, everything fell apart. The Hussars were unable to find an answer to DESIGNATED’s aggressive style of play. Their opponents began to dominate in one-on-one duels, made excellent use of utility items and regularly broke down Hussars’ set-ups. There were also communication errors and overly cautious rotations, which cost them further points.

The closing stages were tense, and whilst the 13–10 scoreline doesn’t look disastrous, given the promising start, this is one of those defeats that hurts the most. The Hussars had the match within their grasp, but lacked the consistency and composure to seal the deal.

  • Nordix Esport 13–4 Hussars, Train

From the very start, the match didn’t go the Hussars’ way. The team struggled to find their rhythm, which gave their opponents the upper hand as early as the first half. Although the 8:4 half-time score didn’t seem disastrous, it was clear that Nordix were effectively controlling the game, organising their attacks superbly, and their defence was solid, forcing the Hussars into mistakes.

After the break, the Hussars were unable to mount any kind of challenge, and Nordix did not allow them any chance of a comeback. The Hussars lost every single round in the second half, which only served to highlight just how badly the team was struggling in this match. The 13–4 scoreline was the result of poor organisation and a lack of effective responses to their opponents’ attacks. Throughout the match, they lacked fluidity in their play, which meant that Nordix didn’t give their opponents a moment’s respite.

  • CSDE 13–5 Hussars, Nuke

Another tough test on the demanding Nuke map, where the Hussars struggled to maintain the pace of the game right from the start. The first half ended 9–3 in CSDE’s favour, which meant the entire match was dictated by their opponents. CSDE left the Hussars no room to manoeuvre, controlling the bombsites superbly, whilst every attempt by the Hussars to seize the initiative was effectively thwarted.

After the sides switched maps, the Hussars were hoping for a quick turnaround and a chance to make up for their losses, but CSDE instantly took control of the second half. The Hussars were unable to execute effective defensive strategies, and their opponents’ aggressive rotations successfully disrupted their formations. Their rivals gave them no chance to turn the match around, leading to a swift conclusion to the game.

The 13–5 scoreline reflects CSDE’s complete dominance; they did not allow the Hussars to get a foothold for a single moment. It was definitely one of those matches where the opponents showcased their skills on Nuke, whilst the Hussars failed to find any effective response.

  • Hussars 3–13 M1 Gaming, Anubis

This match was one of the most one-sided of the entire season. Right from the start, M1 Gaming demonstrated their dominance, leaving the Hussars no chance of putting up a fight. The first half ended 2–10 in favour of M1 Gaming, which immediately tipped the balance in their favour. The Hussars were unable to find any answer to their opponents’ aggressive approach, who capitalised brilliantly on every weakness in the Hussars’ play.

After the sides swapped ends, although the Hussars tried to regain control, M1 Gaming gave them no room to manoeuvre. All attempts to regain momentum were quickly thwarted, and the opposing team continued to dominate the map. 3–13 is a ruthless scoreline that best illustrates just how poorly the Hussars performed in this match; the players were simply non-existent on the server.

  • Hussars 6:13 Exilium, Ancient

The match started rather promisingly; although Hussars were trailing 4–8 at half-time, the players hadn’t yet lost hope of turning the match around. In the first half, Exilium fulfilled their role well, controlling the pace of the game and gaining the upper hand, but the Hussars weren’t without a response; a few successful plays gave hope that the second half would be more evenly matched.

Unfortunately, after the break, Exilium took full control of the match and left the Hussars with no chance of a comeback. The Hussars were unable to find an effective response to their opponents’ aggression, whilst Exilium systematically won round after round, finishing the match 6–13 without much difficulty. This result best reflects the dominance Exilium enjoyed throughout the second half, whilst the Hussars were unable to capitalise on any opportunity to turn the match around.

  • ABC4 13–8 Hussars, Nuke

The match against ABC4 had its moments, but unfortunately for the Hussars, the first half ended 10–2 in their opponents’ favour, which effectively put ABC4 in control of the match. Once again, the Hussars failed to get off to a good start; the players made positioning errors and were unable to effectively stop their opponents’ attacks. Although ABC4 did not completely dominate, their solid performance allowed them to win rounds, and the Hussars had no answer to their tactics.

After the break, the Hussars showed some fight, trying to make up for their deficit. They managed to win a few valuable rounds, but the deficit from the first half proved too great to overcome. The Hussars fought ambitiously, but despite their best efforts, they ran out of time to stage a comeback. The final score of 13–8 to ABC4 shows that the Hussars were once again overwhelmed at crucial moments of the match, unable to recover from their slow start.

  • TeamMischievous 4–13 Hussars, Anubis

This was a highlight of the Hussars’ season. The team showed their best form, leading 4–8 at half-time. Although the result was not yet certain, the Hussars clearly took control of the game and proved they can compete at the highest level. Their strategy was solid and their communication seamless, which allowed them to dominate the first half. TeamMischievous were unable to cope with the pressure exerted by the Hussars players, and their lead grew with every round.

After the sides switched sides, the Hussars maintained complete control of the match, made no mistakes, effectively thwarted their opponents’ attacks and calmly closed out round after round. The 4:13 scoreline was the result of a superb performance, solid both offensively and defensively. It was, at last, a confident and decisive victory that gave the team a breather, though unfortunately it remained their only win at this stage of the season.

  • Hussars 5–13 M33 x NEIMARK, Nuke

By far the worst start to a match this season for the Hussars; the 1:11 score at half-time was a result that practically sealed the match’s outcome. The Hussars were unable to find their rhythm or put up a fight against their dominant opponents. The opposition mercilessly capitalised on every mistake and effectively thwarted all attempts at a counter-attack. Even a solid defensive display in the first half proved no help, as M33 x NEIMARK easily seized the initiative and demonstrated their superiority on the server.

After the break, the Hussars players did not give up entirely and managed to win a few rounds on the defensive side, but it was already too late to turn the match around. M33 x NEIMARK maintained their dominance, not allowing a single breakthrough. The 5–13 scoreline best reflects the complete control NEIMARK had over this match, whilst the Hussars were simply too overwhelmed to mount a realistic challenge for points.

Although the first half of the ESEA season has not gone to the Hussars’ plans, they still have a chance to turn things around. A run of defeats and struggles at crucial moments have put the team in a difficult position, but everything is still up for grabs. They still have plenty of matches ahead of them in which they can regain their form, rectify their mistakes and get back on track.

It is important that they learn from their previous setbacks, particularly in terms of communication and consistency in crucial rounds. The halfway point of the season is the perfect time to rethink their strategy and rebuild their mindset, so that the second half of the campaign is more successful. The Hussars haven’t had their final say yet; they have a second chance to demonstrate their strength, and perhaps even fight for a place in the play-offs.
