Two partners in the Gamepex final.

- -

Yesterday marked the final day of the Gamepex LAN tournament, which has been the talk of the Polish gaming community recently. Fortunately, this was down to the e-sports aspect, rather than any drama. The first match we watched yesterday featured our partner — Armitra Esports. Armitra took on Leźne Dudki in a Best of 3 format. The winner of this match would advance to the final.

Our partners won quite comfortably. You could even say that, in a sense, they ran roughshod over their opponents. At the end of the match, the score was 13–3.

  • Armitra 13:3 Leźne Dudki, Train

The next map was de_dust2. Armitra dominated this map just as they had the previous one. The only difference was that Leźne Dudki didn’t finish with three points, but with four. In this way, Armitra Esports secured their place in the LAN tournament final.

  • Armitra 13:4 Leźne Dudki, dust2

Armitra 2:0 Leźne Dudki

Before the final, in which we will see Armitra and Hussars, we were treated to a warm-up match featuring Hussars Young and Leźne Dudki.

The whole battle began on the Anubis map, where our partner finished the first half with a score of 6-6, despite leading 6-3 (on the terrorist side). The map was fairly even; when Hussars Young took the lead 11–9, moments later the match was level again. Unfortunately, Leźne Dudki managed a comeback, and the Anubis map ended 11–13. It is worth noting that this was Hussars YG’s choice.

  • Hussars YG 11:13 Leźne Dudki, Anubis

The next map was the opponent’s choice: Nuke. Nuke, the opponent’s choice, so our team started the first half on the defending side. The first half was fairly easily dominated with a score of 9–3. Sides were switched and the pistol round was won by the youngsters from Hussars. The match ended 11-3. It seemed that Hussars YG would be able to close out this map fairly quickly and we’d move on to the decider. Indeed, they managed to close out the map, but towards the end of the fight on this map things got a bit dicey, as Leźne Dudki needed just one point to force overtime on this map. Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and Hussars YG secured a 13-11 victory on the Nuke map. We move on to the deciding map.

  • Hussars YG 13:11 Leźne Dudki, nuke

The deciding map is Ancient. As this is the decider, we saw a knife round on this map, which Hussars YG won, and so they choose the side — the counter-terrorists. They win the pistol round and the anti-eco round. Hussars once again dominated the first half, this time with a score of 10–2. They won the pistol round again after the side switch. This time, however, they managed to close out the map more quickly. Hussars YG proved the better side in this match thanks to a 13–2 victory on the final map.

  • Hussars YG 13:2 Leźne Dudki, ancient

Hussars YG 2:1 Leźne Dudki

The first map in the final was de_nuke. Armitra started on the counter-terrorist side, whilst Hussars were on the attacking side. Armitra Esports got off to a strong start on this map, taking a 5-1 lead. Moments later, Hussars showed they were in the game, levelling the score at 5-5 and even managing to take the lead at 5-7. First half, sides switched, and Armitra on the attacking side (5-7). The pistol round and the anti-eco round were won by the Hussars players. The score was 5-9, and the Hussars players were slowly starting to pull away. And that’s exactly what happened; the players pulled away, and for the rest of the map we saw only one team winning rounds. The match ended with a score of 5-13.

  • Armitra Esports 5:13 Hussars, Nuke

We’re 0-1 on maps, with the next clash on Ancient. Once again, we’re seeing a strong start from Armitra on the map. The Hussars didn’t score their first point until the 6th round – 5-1. However, once the players broke their duck, they managed to draw level – 5-5. Ultimately, however, Armitra proved to be the better team after the first half – 7:5. Sides are switched and Armitra will now defend. The pistol round is won by the attacking team (Hussars) and we’re back in touch (7:6). Armitra Esports successfully completed a force round and secured their second point after the sides switched (8:6). Following their defeat in the second round, the Hussars players decided to go for a full buy. It wasn’t the ideal loadout, but it was easily enough to close the gap again (8:7). Armitra once again opted for a force round, though this time without the same success as in the previous round. The score was level – 8-8. Moments later, the scoreboard showed Hussars leading 10-8. Armitra won the next round, and the scoreboard read 9–10. The opponent played a round up to $2000, though we had two Kalashnikovs, the rest with PMs and a Rush A. It was a quick start; this kit worked perfectly for the Hussars players – 9–11. The next round also goes to Armitra’s opponents – 9:12. Armitra then responds with a single point – 10:12. Ultimately, however, it is the Hussars who win the final round on this map, bringing the score to 10–13 on Ancient. Thanks to this result, the young Hussars take home the third-place prize.

  • Armitra Esports 10:13 Hussars, Ancient

Armitra 0:2 Hussars

Before the tournament, we interviewed Armitra’s coach, and when asked which opponent they feared most, we received a simple answer – “Hussars”.

Their fears were probably justified; whilst the second map was evenly matched and the result could have gone either way, in the first map the opponents left Armitra with no illusions. Slowly, these Armitra–Hussars encounters are starting to feel like a Polish underground derby.

Hussars finished the Gamepex tournament in first place, whilst the players and coach of Armitra Esports came second. The first map was forgettable, but the second map was worthy of a final.

After the match, we got a short interview with an Armitra player — Mrouz. He was asked, among other things, “What didn’t quite come off?”. Unfortunately, the sound quality went a bit haywire during the interview, so please don’t be too hard on us; we’re writing down what we heard.

It’s hard to say what went wrong. We certainly didn’t have enough training, because the officials were swamped. I think we’ll make up for it a bit. We also had a bit of bad luck, like some kills being blocked by smoke. A lot of unlucky things like that happened. Ultimately, that resulted in our opponents winning.

How would you rate the individual performances of the players on your team? Was it nerves, or did the Hussars simply play at a different level?

Well, the Hussars certainly played well. As for us, I’d say we played okay. We know we can do better. We need to learn from this, and we’ll keep playing.
