This time, we’re focusing on their most recent match, which, unfortunately, turned out to be the Polish team’s final game of the season.
The battle for survival
On 20 September at 7.30 pm, Excurity Gaming faced the Russian team Theseus Esports in the fourth round of the losers’ bracket. The stakes were clear: the winner stays in the running for promotion, whilst the loser is eliminated from the competition and must bid farewell to their dreams of a higher division. The Poles went into the match motivated and full of confidence in their abilities, and the first map could only reinforce those hopes.
A strong start and hopes of success
The contest began with a map chosen by Theseus Esports (de_ancient), which often puts the team making the pick in the role of favourite. This time, however, Excurity Gaming showed their full potential. The lads set a fast pace right from the start and quickly gained the upper hand. At half-time, they were leading 7–5, which already provided a solid foundation for controlling the second half.
After switching sides, the Poles didn’t let their opponents get a foothold. Effective individual plays and well-organised team play translated into further points, until finally Excurity Gaming sealed the map with a confident 13–6 victory. This result put them 1–0 up in the series and allowed them to look forward to the rest of the match with optimism.
Trouble on their own pick
The second map (de_inferno) was supposed to be a testament to Excurity Gaming’s good form. They were the ones who picked it, hoping that their familiarity with their favourite plays and comfortable map layout would allow them to close out the series without having to play a decider. Unfortunately, reality turned out to be quite different.
From the very start, the Theseus Esports players seized the initiative. The Russians capitalised effectively on the Poles’ mistakes and dictated the pace of the game. The half-time score of 4–8 clearly showed that Excurity were in a difficult position. Although the lads tried to get back into the game after the sides switched, their opponents controlled the match and ultimately won 7–13.
At this point, the tension reached its peak, as the outcome of the entire match was to be decided by the final map.
Decider without a happy ending
The final map (de_mirage) was selected via the ban system, meaning it was a map on which neither team felt entirely comfortable. It is at moments like these that mental resilience counts, as well as the ability to adapt quickly to the situation on the server.
Unfortunately, Excurity Gaming failed to bounce back from their defeat on the second map. At half-time, they were once again trailing 4–8, whilst their opponents were really hitting their stride. The Russian team capitalised on their momentum and steadily extended their lead. The Poles tried to fight back, looking for an opportunity to stage a comeback, but this time they lacked the firepower. The final score of 6–13 dashed their hopes of progressing further and brought their Season 54 campaign to a close.
The end of a dream, a new beginning
The 1:2 defeat to Theseus Esports marks the definitive end of Excurity Gaming’s run in the ESEA Entry Season 54 playoffs. The team fought right to the very end, but mistakes and a lack of composure at crucial moments sealed their fate. The earlier defeat was certainly an added burden, which may have lingered in the players’ minds. Although the start of the series offered hope, it was ultimately the Russians who celebrated victory and progression to the next round.
For Excurity Gaming, this means that in the next, 55th season, we will see them back in the Entry division. This is undoubtedly a disappointment, as expectations were higher, and the team itself showed flashes of truly good play. However, lessons must be learnt, and these defeats can serve as a solid foundation for further development.
What’s next for Excurity Gaming?
Season 54 has come to an end, but for the Polish team this is just the start of a new phase. The players have time to analyse their matches, work on their communication and prepare even more thoroughly for the challenges ahead. ESEA Entry is a place where every mistake costs dearly, but at the same time offers the chance to build character and resilience.
Excurity Gaming has shown that it can hold its own against tough opponents and has the potential to compete for more in the future. The key now will be to maintain motivation and continue to work on the team’s identity. Fans are certainly hoping that, as early as next season, they’ll see a team that not only returns stronger, but also finally breaks through the Entry barrier and advances to a higher tier.
