The ESEA play-offs have come to an end, which means we can now fully assess the performances of the teams we’ve been following throughout the season. It was a time full of excitement, fierce battles for every point, and attempts to secure promotion to higher divisions. For some, it ended in success and the achievement of their goals. For others, however, it ended in disappointment and the need to learn lessons for the future. In this article, we take a look at how our partner teams fared in the three divisions… Open, Intermediate and Main. We’ll take another look at their results in the regular season, but above all in the play-offs. In doing so, we’ll highlight the key moments and what determined the final outcomes.
ESEA Open – promotion despite problems and a missed opportunity
In the lowest of the divisions discussed, namely Open, we have two teams left to cover. Newcomers Lunacy NXT and Carpathian Roja. We covered the regular season of this division in more detail in our previous article, but we omitted a summary of Carpathian Roja’s performance, so we’re filling that gap here. The team finished the season with a 4–10 record, which clearly shows they lacked consistency throughout the season. Despite the odd good match and moments where they were able to stand up to their rivals, Carpathian Roja were unable to maintain consistent form over a longer period.
Particularly evident were problems with closing out matches and maintaining concentration in crucial rounds. In many matches, it was the details that made the difference… Lost endgames, a lack of consistency, or failed to capitalise on economic advantages. It is precisely these elements that often separate teams fighting for the playoffs. Ultimately, their record left them with no realistic chance of advancing to the next stage. This means the team will have to try their luck in this division again next season.
Lunacy NXT, however, have far more reasons to be pleased, having already shown themselves to be very solid during the regular season. Securing a place in the A bracket of the playoffs was a huge achievement and, at the same time, a pivotal moment in the team’s entire season. Such a start to the knockout stage meant a better seeding and no margin for error. However, the play-offs themselves did not go their way…
The team lost both matches they played, ending their campaign with a 1–2 record. The most important thing, however, is that despite failing to win any matches on the server, Lunacy NXT achieved their main objective. Thanks to their high position after the regular season, the team secured promotion to the Intermediate division. This is a perfect example of how important consistency and good results are in the early stages of the season. In the case of Lunacy NXT, it was the foundation laid in the first phase that proved to be the key to success. Even if the end of the competition wasn’t quite as successful in purely sporting terms.
Intermediate – missed opportunities and a valuable lesson for the future
The Intermediate division was clearly more demanding than the Open. The pace of play, the level of preparation and the consistency of the teams were all much higher here. In this part of the season, we followed three teams… VoFoxen, Lunacy Gaming and Brothers Bus. Each had their moments, but only VoFoxen managed to qualify for the playoffs, which clearly illustrates just how tough the competition was.
VoFoxen started the knockout stage very promisingly, winning their first two matches and raising hopes of a promotion battle. The team looked solid both individually and as a unit. However, the subsequent matches proved much tougher. A defeat in the upper bracket pushed them down to the lower bracket, where there was no room for error. A second loss ended their campaign with a 2–2 record. Crucially, however, VoFoxen were playing in Bracket B, which significantly reduced their chances of promotion. Ultimately, finishing in 34th–48th place meant no promotion, as only the top 16 teams progressed. This shows how important it is not only to reach the playoffs, but also to secure a favourable seeding.
Lunacy Gaming finished the season with a 4–10 record and, as we mentioned earlier, they lacked consistency above all else. The team had its better moments. However, they were unable to turn them into a winning streak that would have allowed them to think about the playoffs. The Autobus brothers, who were missing from the previous regular season round-up, were definitely closer to success. A 6–8 record left them just outside the playoff zone. Ultimately, all three teams remain in Intermediate and will fight for more again next season.
ESEA Main – high standards and narrow margins deciding promotion
The Main division is clearly a higher level of competition, where every match is of immense importance and the differences between teams are minimal. In this part of the season, we watched Nexium POLteam and Constrict Gaming. Both teams put in solid performances, but only one of them managed to qualify for the playoffs.
POLteam finished the regular season with a 7–7 record, which can be considered a decent result, especially at such a demanding level. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to secure promotion, which shows just how evenly matched the field was. The team was able to compete with strong opponents, but lacked consistency and a few key victories that could have decided their position in the table.
Constrict Gaming provided more excitement in the playoffs, where they put in a solid performance and remained in contention for promotion for a long time. Ultimately, they finished the competition with a 3–2 record, which placed them 17th–24th. Unfortunately, only the top 8 teams were promoted, so despite a good result, they fell just short of their goal. Nevertheless, Constrict’s performance can be viewed positively. They showed their potential and proved they are capable of competing at this level. Both they and POLteam can regard this season as a solid foundation for future competitions.
Summary
The recently concluded ESEA season brought mixed results for our teams. Lunacy NXT achieved the greatest success, securing promotion to the higher division. The other teams showed flashes of good play, but in most cases lacked consistency or a few key victories. The upcoming season will be another chance for them to improve and prove their worth. If they learn the right lessons, we can expect even better results and more teams fighting for promotion.
