VoFoxen returns to ESEA competition after a long run of setbacks

- -

Last time, we took a look at how our partners were faring in the ESEA Intermediate and Main divisions. At that point, all the teams in question had played just eight matches. Among them was VoFoxen, which was already showing flashes of its form, even though the season was still in its early stages. Since then, the competition has clearly picked up pace. The teams have now entered a much more demanding phase of the competition, in which every subsequent match carries increasing weight in determining the final league table. Today we return directly to VoFoxen, which has had another intense few weeks of play… With most teams in the league having already played twelve matches, this allows for a much better assessment of their actual form and potential for the rest of the season.

On a side note, however, it is worth mentioning the situation of Bracia Autobus… A team which, after six rounds, with only one win secured by a walkover, decided to end their participation in the season. Their 19 record and four recent walkovers clearly show that the team was unable to continue competing in this season’s ESEA Intermediate.

VoFoxen in Intermediate: four matches, four different stories

VoFoxen’s run in their last four matches once again demonstrated just how inconsistent this team can be in the current ESEA Intermediate season. Following an earlier run in which the team started with four wins and then suffered four defeats, it seemed that their form was beginning to stabilise. Reality, however, quickly dashed those hopes… The new run began with two consecutive defeats, only to end with two victories that restored some balance to the results.

Although the record remains mixed, individual matches have shown that VoFoxen are capable of both performing at a very high level against demanding opponents and dominating when they find their rhythm. Particularly significant here were the matches decided by the finest of margins, where the outcome was determined by overtime or single rounds. It was in these matches that the problem with closing out maps was most frequently exposed, and this remains one of the key challenges for the team.

A painful overtime on Ancient against Printer

The first match in the series in question was against Kazakhstan’s Printer, played on the Ancient map. From the very start, it was clear that both teams were of a very similar standard. This quickly translated into a closely contested match, with neither side able to establish a significant lead. The first half ended 6-6, which only confirmed that a long and demanding battle lay ahead on this map.

After the sides switched, the pattern of play did not change significantly. Neither team was able to break the deadlock, and the subsequent rounds were also evenly split, leading to another 6-6 draw in the second half of regular time. As a result, the scoreboard showed 12-12, necessitating an overtime period. The first extra round failed to produce a winner… as both teams remained neck and neck, with neither able to build a decisive lead.

It was only the second overtime that brought the final decision. Printer managed to completely seize the initiative and capitalise on moments when VoFoxen were unable to respond to their plays. The rival won it without dropping a single round, closing out the entire match with a score of 15:19. It was a very tough and, at the same time, painful defeat for VoFoxen. Especially considering how evenly matched the game was for the vast majority of regular time.

Missed rounds on Nuke against Cillerian

VoFoxen’s second opponent was the Belgian side Cillerian, and the map was once again Nuke. This time, the match did not go the Foxes’ way from the very start… They struggled to impose their own tempo and find stability at key moments in the rounds. This translated into a clear advantage for their opponents as early as the first half, which they ended with a 4-8 lead. This put them in a very comfortable position heading into the second half of the map.

After the sides switched, VoFoxen tried to get back into the match and gradually make up the deficit. However, Cillerian consistently maintained their hard-earned lead and did not allow the Foxes to close the gap completely. Even though VoFoxen were able to win individual rounds and halt their opponents’ momentum, they lacked a longer, more consistent run that could have realistically turned the match around and levelled the score.

As the rounds progressed, the rival’s lead began to weigh increasingly heavily on the final result. Cillerian, on the other hand, controlled the pace of the game right until the very end. Ultimately, the Belgian side secured victory within regulation time, closing out the map with a score of 10:13. This was VoFoxen’s second consecutive defeat in this series, which clearly exacerbated a difficult spell in their league campaign and put the team in a precarious position. Where the upcoming matches became even more crucial in terms of their position in the table.

VoFoxen’s breakthrough after overtime

The breakthrough finally came in the third match, in which VoFoxen faced Serbian side Souls Heart Esport on the Nuke map. From the very start, it was a very evenly matched encounter, with neither side able to establish a clear advantage. Both teams traded rounds, but it was the opponents who ended the first half with a narrow 5-7 lead. Once again, VoFoxen found themselves playing catch-up.

After the sides switched, however, the Foxes began to display a much more organised and confident performance. They gradually made up the deficit, seizing successive opportunities to narrow the points gap. Eventually, they managed to level the score, forcing the match into overtime. The comeback itself was a significant moment, showing that the team could maintain their focus despite an earlier deficit.

In the extra rounds, VoFoxen displayed far better organisation and greater effectiveness in key moments. This, in turn, allowed them to tip the balance of victory in their favour. Ultimately, the Foxes won the match 16-13, ending a difficult run of defeats. It was an important victory not only in terms of league points but also mentally, particularly given the two previous, very demanding matches that had ended in defeat.

VoFoxen’s dominance on Ancient

The final match of this series presented a completely different picture of the game. VoFoxen faced Doom Squirrel and took full control of the Ancient map right from the start. They imposed their own tempo on their opponents and did not allow them to settle into the game at any stage. The opening rounds set the tone for the match, and over time the Foxes’ lead began to grow steadily. The first half ended with a clear 9-3 lead, which effectively decided the outcome of the match.

After the sides switched, VoFoxen didn’t let up and continued to execute their game plan consistently. The team maintained solid organisation, not allowing Doom Squirrel to build any extended run of rounds that might have got them back into the match. Every attempt at a comeback was quickly neutralised, making it even harder for their opponents to get back into the contest.

As the rounds progressed, VoFoxen’s dominance became increasingly apparent, and the closing stages of the match were merely a formality. Ultimately, the match ended in a decisive 13-4 victory. This made it one of the most one-sided performances in the entire series under review and a clear departure from the earlier, far more demanding encounters.

From overtime to dominance

After four matches, VoFoxen ends this series with mixed feelings, but also with clear signs of potential. The team has shown that it can both compete over the full distance against demanding opponents and dominate when it manages to find the right rhythm. However, maintaining consistency remains key, as in ESEA Intermediate every mistake quickly translates into a loss of points in the table. The upcoming matches will therefore be a crucial test of whether VoFoxen can maintain the standard seen in the best moments of this series.
