Immunity League – Matchday 5 and the end of the group stage. Who have qualified, and who are leaving the league?

- -

The fifth round of the Immunity League was like the final chapter before entering a completely new stage of the competition. Some went into it with their backs against the wall, whilst others could simply cement their dominance. Every point could have decided who progressed, and even before the matches began, the table looked like a ticking time bomb… where just a few fixtures could have turned the groups completely upside down. Although there was no shortage of one-sided results and walkovers, it was precisely these crucial matches that made the end of the group stage the most electrifying moment of the league. And since the excitement was such that it felt as though we were watching the final rounds of the play-offs, it’s time to take stock… Who emerged victorious from the chaos, and who were knocked out of the tournament sooner than they’d planned?

Of course, if you missed the earlier matches, check out the round-up of the previous round and follow our tournament coverage, where you’ll find the latest results, match schedules and broadcast details.

Finally, here’s something for the stats geeks. Now that we know all the results, we can finally answer the question: which map was the true king of this edition? Ancient? Train? Or perhaps someone has dusted off Mirage?

Group A — unflinching dominance

The final round in Group A brought the competition to a close with no room for doubt. TNC Esport’s match against Nexium POLteam merely confirmed their all-round strength. A confident 13:4 victory on Inferno underlined their dominance over the entire field. On the other side of the bracket, Awanturnicy were awarded three points without a fight, as Insomnia… well, had already thrown in the towel some time ago. A similar scenario unfolded in the match between NoName Team and Eco Bo Bieda. The latter had ended their season without playing a single match since the second round, so the 1–0 result came as no surprise to anyone.

The biggest question mark ahead of the final round was whether NoName Team would hold onto their place in the top four. The walkover obviously helped them in this regard, but given Awanturnicy’s form and the chaos caused by the teams that withdrew, they made the most of their opportunity. In this group, TNC and POLteam confirmed their class, NoName their consistency, whilst Awanturnicy round off the top four.

Qualifiers from Group A:

  • TNC Esport
  • Nexium POLteam
  • NoName Team
  • Awanturnicy

Group B — a flawless Constrict Gaming and a successful run by doZera

In Group B, there was supposed to be one standout match… doZera versus Constrict Gaming, and indeed it was the only match that lived up to its sporting potential. Constrict withstood the pressure on Train and, after a hard-fought map, won 16–14, sealing their top spot. As for the rest of the matches in this group… Tytani Pracy bagged a walkover victory against M0CZODOL, who decided to forfeit the match. Finally, VoFoxen lost to Victoria Nostra after a surprisingly solid performance on Overpass.

The walkovers slightly disrupted the natural rhythm of the final round, but did not alter the balance of power. Constrict remained unbeaten, doZera held on to a comfortable second place, and Victoria Nostra jumped to third thanks to their victory over VoFoxen. The Foxes themselves, despite their defeat, secured fourth place, guaranteeing their entry into the play-offs.

Qualifiers from Group B:

  • Constrict Gaming
  • doZera
  • Victoria Nostra
  • VoFoxen

Group C — the most evenly matched finish?

In Group C, however, there was one upset after another, but this time it involved teams that had long since lost their motivation. Modern Players were awarded a walkover victory against Oblivion Team, who failed to turn up on the server. As a result, they finished the group stage with one of the best records. On the actual server, Timeless defeated Vandals Clan 13–9, in what was, in fact, the only match in this group that actually provided any excitement. After all, it was inevitable that ViBe Gaming would pick up points following a walkover against Gloris AC, who had withdrawn from the competition some time ago.

Ultimately, this group was characterised by a sense of calm. Modern Players, ViBe and Timeless had all but secured their progression earlier on, but their final results merely sealed the final standings. Vandals held onto fourth place thanks to their head-to-head record, despite failing to secure crucial rounds in their match against Timeless.

Teams advancing from Group C:

  • Modern Players
  • ViBe Gaming
  • Timeless
  • Vandals Clan

Group D — Ice Age on Fire

In Group D, it had long been known that Young Stars Talents would not finish the season, so Visionary were awarded a walkover victory. The other two matches, however, proved thrilling. Mollitiem faced the Ice Age on Train but had to concede defeat, losing 7–13. The Ice Age thus demonstrated their class once again and finished the group stage undefeated. The most intriguing match, however, was the clash between Tuga Clan and Hussars. On Nuke, it looked for a long time as though the match would go to overtime, but ultimately Tuga overcame their opponents 13–11, securing crucial points.

This result meant that Tuga overtook the Hussars in the race for third place and thus secured a higher seeding for the play-offs. The final standings are therefore very logical: Epoka dominated, whilst Mollitiem put in a consistent performance. Tuga snatched a place in the top three at the very last moment, whilst the Hussars, despite their defeat, held onto fourth place solely thanks to their earlier results.

Qualifiers from Group D:

  • Ice Age
  • Mollitiem
  • Tuga Clan
  • Hussars

What’s next, and which maps dominated the Immunity League group stage?

The Immunity League group stage has come to an end. And whilst the final round was a mix of spectacular clashes, walkovers and surprising results, the real game is only just beginning. The top 16 have been confirmed, the knockout bracket has been revealed, and for the first time in weeks we can take a step back and ask ourselves: who actually looks like the favourite?

However, before we start spinning tales of dark horses and potential giants, it’s worth taking a look at something that reveals more about these matches than meets the eye… I’m talking about map statistics. Because whilst the result is one thing, the map pool often reveals who feels confident and who is desperately searching for a strategy that works for them.

Most frequently selected maps in the group stage

(based on all matches played, excluding walkovers)

  • Ancient – 41% of matches played
    • The undisputed dominant force. This is where almost half of all matches took place, and it’s here that we saw the most one-sided dominance.
  • Train – 15% of matches played
    • A classic making a comeback? After all, this is the map on which several groups saw their matches decided.
  • Overpass – 12% of matches played
    • A reliable choice for teams with a more tactical approach.
  • Nuke – 12% of matches played
    • Often chosen when a team wanted to go for a bolder strategy or catch their opponents off guard.
  • Mirage – 10% of matches played
    • Played less frequently than in many other leagues, but when it did feature, it usually signalled a fiercely contested match.
  • Inferno – 7% of matches played
    • Just a few matches, but ones that had a real impact on the league table.
  • Dust 2 – 2% of matches played
    • Almost forgotten. The only map that lay gathering dust in a drawer until the very end of the group stage… It appeared just once, and that was as a last-minute replacement.

Will these choices hold up in the play-offs? Perhaps. Let’s remember, however, that when the pressure mounts, teams are capable of pulling something out of the hat that they haven’t shown before.
