The Polish Counter-Strike scene has always provided fans with plenty of excitement, and this season, during ESEA Entry S54, the Hussars have taken centre stage. After an excellent regular season, in which they achieved an 11-3 record and finished 16th, the team secured a seeding and automatic qualification for the second round of the upper bracket of Playoffs A. However, this comfort did not mean a lack of challenges. On the contrary, the upcoming matches were set to be a true test of form, character and ambition.
The first test against an exotic opponent
On Tuesday evening, 4 September at 7.30 pm, the Hussars faced the Georgian side Millenium AC. The match promised to be an interesting one – the opponents were not favourites, but they were capable of surprising with their aggressive style of play. However, from the very first minutes, the Poles showed that they hadn’t come to the playoffs just to make up the numbers.
Right from the first map, de_dust2, their excellent defensive organisation and bold attacking decisions were evident. Hussars took an 8:4 lead after the first half and held on to it until the very end, closing out the map with a comfortable 13:8 victory. The force rounds and quick breaks proved crucial, completely throwing the Georgians off their stride.
The second map, de_ancient, was set to highlight the difference in quality even more clearly. Playing on their own pick, the Poles once again started with a solid 8:4 lead, before ruthlessly capitalising on every mistake their opponents made. Quick rotations, excellent teamwork and a cool head in the closing stages of rounds saw Hussars win decisively (13:5), ending the match with a 2:0 scoreline. This triumph not only saw them progress to the next round, but also secured them a place in the higher division – ESEA Intermediate.
A clash with legends of the Polish scene
After such a start, appetites only grew. On Saturday, 6 September at 8 pm, the Hussars faced a far more challenging opponent – the Polish OLDBOYS mix, whose line-up included rallen, tudson, ToM223, MICHU and Goofy. Although these players currently focus more on streaming than on professional competition, their experience and skills were undeniable.
The first map turned out to be a real lesson in humility. The Hussars, despite having picked it themselves, were completely unable to find their rhythm. OLDBOYS dominated the first half, going into the break with a massive 10-2 lead. After the sides switched, Hussars tried to make up the deficit, but the gap was too wide to turn the match around. Ultimately, the map went to their opponents with a score of 6-13.
The second map was a completely different story. This time, it was the Hussars who took the initiative, leading 7:5 at half-time. It seemed that an upset was within reach. Unfortunately, the final stages belonged to the more experienced opponents, who capitalised on every minor mistake by the Poles, winning narrowly 11:13
Conclusions and prospects
However, the defeat to OLDBOYS does not spell the end of their dreams. The Hussars drop into the lower bracket, where they still have a chance to secure promotion to their dream division, ESEA Main. Now every match will be a do-or-die affair. A single defeat will definitively eliminate them from the playoffs and leave them with promotion to ESEA Intermediate only.
Their next test awaits them tomorrow, 10 September at 7.30 pm, when they face Rhadamantys. The stakes are clear: a win secures their long-awaited promotion to ESEA Main, whilst a defeat closes this chapter and ends their playoff run. One thing is certain – if the Hussars play with the same courage and heart as they have so far, there will certainly be no shortage of excitement.
