The ArrMy Open play-offs delivered both quick results and genuine excitement that lasted right until the final rounds. One of the teams that performed best in this stage of the competition was Lunacy Gaming. The team, having enjoyed a very successful regular season with a 9–1 record and fourth place in the table, confirmed their quality at the most crucial moment of the season. Two convincing victories paved the way for the decisive clash for promotion. However, it was a thrilling BO3 match that ultimately decided the fate of promotion to ArrMy Rising. Below, we take a closer look at how this journey unfolded.
Play-offs under control
The knockout stage was the moment for Lunacy Gaming to confirm their league form and prove that their place at the top of the table was no fluke. Three matches, including two quick BO1s and one decisive BO3. These fully showcased the team’s form. From complete dominance, through a moment of weakness, to a tense but victorious finish in the do-or-die match.
Lunacy Gaming 13:4 AWT E-SPORTS | Nuke
The first play-off match was almost the perfect start to the decisive phase of the competition for Lunacy Gaming. On the Nuke map, the team looked very well prepared from the very start and confident in their plan for the match. The difference in quality of play, however, was evident almost from the opening minutes. Lunacy quickly seized the initiative, not allowing AWT E-SPORTS to find their rhythm. Control of the tempo and composure at key moments meant that their lead gradually grew, whilst their opponents were increasingly forced to react rather than dictate the terms of the match.
With each successive round, Lunacy Gaming only confirmed their dominance. AWT E-SPORTS had clear problems breaking down their opponents’ well-functioning game. This, in turn, led to increasingly nervous decisions and mistakes at crucial moments. The match ended with a score of 13:4, which fully reflects the course of the contest. It was a calm, controlled victory. It gave Lunacy a solid boost for the rest of the play-offs and clearly showed that the team is ready to fight for promotion.
Lunacy Gaming 13:4 Moloboyz | Overpass
The second play-off match only confirmed that Lunacy Gaming had made a very strong start to the decisive phase of the competition. This time, their opponents were Moloboyz, and the arena for the contest was the Overpass map. From the very first rounds, it was clear that Lunacy had no intention of changing their approach. The team played confidently, consistently and with great control over the flow of the match. Moloboyz tried to find their opportunities, but every attempt to seize the initiative was quickly neutralised, which gradually deprived them of the space to spread their wings.
Lunacy Gaming impressed with their composure and maturity in decision-making, not allowing their opponents to build any scoring runs. The final score of 13:4 once again clearly demonstrated the gulf in class between the teams. It was a second consecutive convincing victory, which not only brought Lunacy Gaming closer to promotion but also sent a clear message to the other teams that they are in excellent form ahead of the decisive clash.
Lunacy Gaming 2:1 Finding Elo
13:10 Ancient | 6:13 Nuke | 16:13 Dust 2
The decisive promotion match against Finding Elo was a completely different challenge from previous encounters. The BO3 series opened with the Ancient map, where it was clear from the very first rounds that the stakes were having a significant impact on the course of the contest. Both teams played very cautiously for a long time, focusing on avoiding mistakes and capitalising on isolated opportunities. The score remained even for most of the match, but at crucial moments it was Lunacy Gaming who managed to keep their cool. Better control of round endings and consistency in executing their game plan allowed them to tip the balance in their favour and close out Ancient with a score of 13:10.
The second map, Nuke, brought a marked change in the game’s dynamics. Finding Elo quickly seized the initiative and imposed their pace, effectively limiting Lunacy Gaming’s options. This time it was Lunacy who had to chase the score, but their opponents did not allow them to spread their wings and consistently secured round after round. Finding Elo’s lead grew as the match progressed, whilst Lunacy were unable to find an answer to their opponents’ well-oiled gameplay. The 6-13 defeat meant one thing… the third and final map would decide who progressed.
So everything came down to the Dust 2 map, which provided the most excitement of the entire series. From the very first rounds, the game was neck and neck, with neither team able to build a comfortable lead. The pressure mounted with every round, whilst the stakes of the match were evident in the cautious and, at times, nervous play of both teams. Regular time ended in a draw, meaning an overtime round was necessary. It was in this overtime that Lunacy Gaming kept their cool and performed better in the crucial moments. Ultimately, a 16-13 victory sealed a 2-1 win in the series and the long-awaited promotion to ArrMy Rising.
The competition continues – who else can qualify?
However, Lunacy Gaming’s promotion does not yet completely seal the competition for a place in ArrMy Rising. Vandals Protect remain in contention, though their situation is far more difficult. The team has dropped to the lower bracket and will need to win two more matches to join Lunacy. Every subsequent match will therefore be a fight for survival for them. TW E-Sports, meanwhile, have bid farewell to their dreams of promotion, having come very close to success. First, they lost the promotion match in the upper bracket, and then failed to turn the tide in the lower bracket. Thus, they were eliminated almost at the very last hurdle.
