Panico eSports stumbles at the start of the ESEA playoffs

- -

The playoffs of the 54th ESEA season are gathering pace, and there’s no shortage of excitement in the Entry division. Panico eSports entered the knockout stage hoping for a successful start, but their very first match showed that the road to success would not be an easy one. Although the team had to accept defeat in their opening match, fate granted them a moment’s respite, and advancing via a bye allowed them to catch their second wind. Will this opportunity be enough to rebuild morale and return stronger in the upcoming matches?

A false start for Panico

Panico eSports 0:2 Unit

11:13 | Ancient

The first map of the series was Ancient, selected by Panico eSports. The choice may seem a little surprising, as this season, whenever Panico played Ancient, it usually ended in defeat for them. Despite this, the team decided to start the series with this very map. From the very start, however, the match was very evenly balanced, and neither side was able to take the initiative for long. The first half ended in a draw, which only confirmed just how fiercely contested the match was. In many rounds, Panico managed to counter their opponents’ attempts, but they lacked that certain something when it came to closing out rounds. It was precisely these minor slip-ups that meant the situation remained wide open after the sides switched.

The second half also failed to produce a clear favourite. The score hovered around a draw for a long time, and the fate of the map was only decided in the very final moments. There, however, Unit showed greater composure, capitalising on their chances to close out the first map with a score of 11:13. Despite the defeat, Panico eSports did not perform badly on an individual level. Bud1nC4 put in the best performance, finishing the map with 25 kills and 17 deaths. Voila also deserves a mention, with 22 kills and just 15 deaths. These were certainly numbers that could have secured a victory in another match. Unfortunately, this time the strong performances of individual players did not translate into the final result for the team as a whole.

7:13 | Dust 2

The second map of the series was Dust 2, selected by Unit. Panico had played several matches on this map this season. Some ended in victories, others in defeats, so it was difficult to say for certain what to expect. On paper, it looked set to be another closely fought contest, but reality quickly proved those predictions wrong. From the very first rounds, Unit looked confident and steadily built up their lead. By the end of the first half, a 4-8 lead clearly showed who was in control on the server. Panico tried to make up the deficit after the sides switched, but their opponents didn’t let up and saw the map through to the end without much trouble. The final score of 7:13 sealed Unit’s victory both on the map and in the series 0:2.

Unfortunately, none of Panico’s players finished with a positive score this time, though it is worth noting that the team looked solid as a unit. Voila and fRO5T finished the match with identical stats of 15 kills and 16 deaths, whilst Bud1nC4 added 14 kills with the same number of deaths. These figures show that, despite the defeat, Panico did not lag significantly behind in individual performance. However, they lacked the finishing touch in rounds and a cool head at crucial moments.

What next for Panico eSports?

The series ended 0-2, and it’s hard not to feel that this match served as a lesson for the future for Panico eSports. On Ancient, the team came very close to victory, but a lack of consistency in the decisive rounds cost them the chance of a better result. Dust 2, on the other hand, showed that they still need to work on their consistency. The opponents took the initiative from the start and didn’t let it slip until the very end.

Individually, it didn’t look too bad. On the first map in particular, Bud1nC4 and Voila performed very well. On the second map, however, Voila, fRO5T and Bud1nC4 were all on a par. The problem, as it turned out, was a failure to close out rounds, which is crucial in the playoffs against tough opponents.

For Panico, this defeat does not spell the end, but rather serves as a reminder of what needs working on ahead of future matches. If the team learns from its mistakes and improves its consistency, it can still fight for its place later in the season.
