Scandal following the Army Open match? TW E-Sports condemns toxic behaviour in esports

- -

A few days ago, a match was played as part of the Arrma Open playoffs, which was intended to be a celebration of competition and sporting excitement. Instead, the aftermath turned into one of the most disturbing incidents of recent weeks on the Polish Counter-Strike scene. Within hours of the match, TW E-Sports spoke out. Following their victory over Perła-Esport and the standard “ez” post in the match chat, players from the opposing team were alleged to have engaged in utterly unacceptable behaviour. Instead of a sporting reaction, TW E-Sports began receiving death threats, attempts at doxing and threats of physical confrontation, which go far beyond any norms of competition. Both in esports and in the real world.

Threats, doxing and accountability

According to reports from TW E-Sports, the situation quickly spiralled out of control after the match ended. Certain messages began to appear in private messages and post-match communications. These had nothing to do with sporting emotions or what is commonly understood as trash talk. We are talking about death threats, vulgar and homophobic insults, and threats of physical confrontation. Such as “if I turn up with a Glock, maybe even the Pope will train you” or “may you all die, faggots”. Unfortunately, there were also attempts at doxing, involving the disclosure of names and, as the organisation reports, even the addresses of players. An example is the sentence “[n4t3k] how’s it going, go-karters?”.

Such behaviour is not “strong language” or an online spat. It crosses a line beyond which a real threat to the safety of specific individuals begins. As a representative of TW E-Sports emphasises:

We’ve never encountered such extreme behaviour in CS before. No one has ever doxed me for writing ‘ez’ after a match.

Arrmy responded to the reports without hesitation. After analysing them, the organiser imposed a two-week ban on the Perła-Esport players and excluded them from further competition in the playoffs with this line-up. This decision sends a clear signal that tournament organisers will not turn a blind eye to situations where competition turns into threats and hatred.

TW E-Sports has spoken out just as firmly. The organisation has unequivocally condemned all forms of verbal aggression that go beyond sporting trash talk, such as threats to life or limb and attempts to disclose personal data. Team representatives have also announced that, should the situation escalate further, they will refer the matter to the relevant authorities.

The whole situation demonstrates once again that, despite its digital nature, esports operates in the real world. Words have consequences, and condoning threats or doxing only leads to the further degradation of the scene. If the industry is to develop in a professional direction, the community must publicise, report and consistently condemn such behaviour.

TW E-Sports shows that there is no tolerance for misconduct in esports

The TW E-Sports and Perła-Esport case should not be remembered merely as yet another post-match incident. It is a clear warning sign for the entire scene that the line between competition and toxicity is all too easily crossed these days. Emotions are an integral part of esports, but they cannot justify threats, hatred or attempts to interfere in someone’s life outside the server.

Army’s conduct and TW E-Sports’ stance show that taking action makes sense and that there are real consequences. Now the responsibility also lies with the community. It is up to players, organisations and fans not to downplay such situations and to condemn them unequivocally. If esports is to continue developing as a professional and safe space, such behaviour must be met with a clear response. No exceptions, no excuses and no tolerance.
