The Venom Vipers’ dreams are over – they’ve been knocked out of the Arrma Open

- -

The Polish esports scene is buzzing with excitement, and not just at the very top level, where Apogee are taking on the best in Bucharest. Things are just as heated on the domestic front – the play-offs for Arma, one of the most important leagues, are in full swing. It is there, in the Open division, that many dramatic moments and surprises are unfolding. In the third round, the Venom Vipers were knocked out of the tournament; despite their ambition and potential, they failed to progress further up the bracket.

Who stopped the Venom Vipers in their quest for promotion?

    • 13:7, Ancient
    • 13:3, Mirage

It was not a day the Venom Vipers will want to remember for long. Their third-round match in the Arrmy Open play-offs ended in a swift and painful 2:0 defeat. Although there was a degree of optimism ahead of the match, the contest did not go their way from the outset. Their opponents dictated the pace, and the Vipers were unable to respond.

The opening map, Ancient, was supposed to be a map where the Vipers feel comfortable and are able to impose their own style of play. Unfortunately, from the very start, it was the opposition who seized the initiative. Although our lads managed to snatch a few rounds and give the opposition a bit of a scare, the overall picture was a far cry from what we’d have liked to see. Despite a few solid moments, the match unfolded on the opponents’ terms, and the final score of 13–7 speaks for itself – the Venom Vipers were unable to find an effective response to their opponents’ well-organised play.

The second map, Mirage – the opponents’ pick – turned out to be a thoroughly one-sided affair. The Vipers looked completely lost – they lacked control, teamwork and any idea of how to break the opponents’ patterns. The opponents played very aggressively and with great confidence, which quickly translated into the score. By the end of the first half, it was already clear that the situation was spiralling out of control, and the final score of 13–3 only served to confirm the opponents’ dominance.

Despite their ambition and previous strong performances, this time the Vipers were unable to reach their usual standard. Problems were evident both in team play and in one-on-one situations. There was a lack of finishing, consistency and perhaps a touch of freshness in their tactical approach.

It’s a painful defeat, but also a valuable experience. Matches like this can be brutal – especially in the play-offs, where there’s no room for error. The Venom Vipers didn’t show their full potential this time, but every performance like this is an opportunity for reflection and to work on further development.

The Arrmy Open season has come to an end for them, but the team’s journey does not end here. The Vipers now need to reflect on a few issues – both tactical and mental. A fresh start, analysis and consistent work could ensure that their next campaign is much stronger. This isn’t the first setback and it certainly won’t be the last – but it is precisely moments like these that build a team’s character.
