We are approaching the end of the 53rd season of the ESEA Open, and the excitement is at its peak. This is the time when every match can determine a team’s future; some are fighting to avoid relegation, whilst others are dreaming of promotion and making their mark on the league’s history. For Young Stars Academy, it had been a season full of highs and low points, but despite everything, they had reached a stage where anything was still possible. The team faced the chance to be promoted to the division above, and everything was to be decided by a single, crucial match.
Was this their moment? Young Stars AC in the promotion decider
After two relatively easy rounds in the losers’ bracket, which we’ve already described in detail in our previous article, the Young Stars Academy faced the most important matches of the season. Each successive match was not only about survival, but also about fulfilling a dream: promotion to a higher division. The pressure mounted with every round, and the margin for error grew ever smaller. Everyone knew that this was when the real test of character and skill was about to begin.
Young Stars AC 2–0 Rocean AC
walkover | Anubis / Train / Nuke
The fourth round of the losers’ bracket was set to be another tough test for Young Stars AC. Their opponents were due to be Rocean AC, but unexpectedly, the match did not go ahead. The reason? Rocean had apparently disbanded before the end of the season; they were left with just four players, meaning they were unable to field a full squad for the match.
As a result, Young Stars were awarded a walkover victory. Although formally an easy win, for the YS players it was a moment of mixed feelings. On the one hand, they were delighted with the promotion and a chance to catch their breath; on the other, they missed the opportunity to test themselves in competitive conditions, especially as a much tougher opponent was already looming on the horizon. This unexpected turn of events therefore placed even greater pressure on the next round, which would decide their hopes of promotion to the next division.
Young Stars AC 1:2 Meraki Esports
14:16 | Nuke
The match on the Nuke map was a real battle, full of twists and turns and tension right up to the very last moments. After the first half, both teams were level at 6:6, demonstrating an evenly matched standard of play and effective responses to their opponents’ tactical moves. The second half also failed to produce a winner, ending once again in a 6:6 draw, which meant that the map’s outcome would be decided in overtime.
In overtime, the battles were fought with even greater intensity. Every round was of the utmost importance, and both sides tried to capitalise on every opportunity to tip the balance of victory in their favour. Ultimately, Young Stars’ rivals proved to be just the narrower of the two, winning the map 14–16. Despite the defeat, the match on Nuke showed that the YS academy is capable of competing at a very high level, putting up strong resistance even in the most difficult moments.
13:5 | Mirage
On Mirage, Young Stars Academy got back on track after a closely fought and thrilling battle on Nuke. The first half alone showed that YS AC could impose their style of play, leading 8–4 and controlling the flow of the game. The team effectively utilised key positions and put pressure on their opponents, which allowed them to build a significant lead before the side switch.
In the second half, Meraki Esports tried to make up for their deficit, but Young Stars remained steady and consistently scored against their opponents. The final score of 13:5 shows that YS dominated on Mirage, demonstrating effective teamwork and good coordination. This match gave the Academy hope of turning the tide of the entire series.
11:13 | Ancient
The third map, Ancient, was set to decide the fate of the entire match. From the very first rounds, it was clear that neither team intended to let up. The game was incredibly evenly matched, as confirmed by the first-half score of 6:6. Both sides effectively neutralised their opponents’ attempts, and every round won was the result of a hard-fought battle and well-thought-out tactics.
After the sides swapped sides, the tension only grew. Young Stars Academy fought with total commitment, but Meraki managed to capitalise on a few key moments that tipped the balance in their favour. Despite attempts to make up for their deficit and moments of dominance, Young Stars AC had to concede defeat, losing 11–13.
Ancient proved to be the most bitter of the three maps played; it was here that the very scenario the Young Stars players had wanted to avoid at all costs came to pass. The defeat meant the end of their promotion hopes, although the team certainly put in a very strong performance and left their hearts on the server.
Although the end of the season did not go as Young Stars AC had hoped, their performance in the play-offs deserves recognition. They showed tremendous character, were able to bounce back from defeat and go toe-to-toe with a formidable opponent. In the end, they were very close indeed – just one, perhaps two rounds short – of realising their dream of promotion to the Entry division.
For the players, this is a painful lesson, but also an invaluable experience. Season 53 has come to an end, but there are further challenges ahead, new tournaments and a chance to come back stronger. If they maintain their standard and continue to work consistently, it is only a matter of time before their dreams of promotion become a reality.
